Cautionary Tales from The War Room - presentation from David Nickson

Tuesday 11th June

APMP UK invites you to enjoy our Summer Barbecue and be entertained and educated by our speaker David Nickson (author of The Bid Manager's Handbook)  with 'Cautionary Tales from the War Room' at the Royal Ascot Golf Club, Ascot, Berkshire on Tuesday 11th June 2013

What beautiful views from the new clubhouse you'll see while you sit down to an excellent barbecue on the terrace. The Royal Ascot Golf Club is proud of its 126-year history, having been given royal status by Queen Victoria. It is less than a mile from Ascot station and within easy reach of the M3 and M4 motorways.

Cautionary Tales from the War Room

After the barbecue, our speaker, David Nickson, will entertain us with some stories from his varied career as a bid manager.

David did his first bid at Logica back in the 1980's.  It must have been fun because he went on to spend 25 years developing his craft as a freelance bid manager and writer.  Over the years he has bid for everything from reconstructive surgery to battlefield simulations, with stop-offs for logistics, IT outsourcing, education, oil and gas, among many others.

He has worked with some of the most brilliant people and stupid management imaginable and seen most things that can go right or wrong with a bid. As you might guess, this has left him with scars, memories and anecdotes - those 'cautionary tales'.  An example is one odd Instruction to Tenderers that specified the maximum dimensions of the vehicle that would be used to deliver their submission. By the time the bid was ready for delivery, it weighed a metric tonne...

The goal of David's talk, mercifully almost free of PowerPoint slides, is to pass on techniques and lessons learned with sufficient humour to make them enjoyable and memorable. In his spare time, David flies 'rag and stick' aircraft and plays classical guitar and jazz sax. He is the author of several books including The Bid Manager's Handbook and Project Management Disasters: And How to Survive Them.

APMP UK members and guest are most welcome.  There will be a charge for this event to defray the additional costs of catering for the barbecue, and a cash bar will be available.
