Understanding the Federal Plain Language Guidelines

Samantha Enslen
President, Dragonfly Editorial

In 2010, the Plain Writing Act was signed into law. The law stipulates that federal agencies must write "clear communication that the public can understand and use" and create regulations that are "accessible, consistent, written in plain language, and easy to understand." So why are we sending those same federal agencies proposals that are dense, inconsistent, confusing, and filled with jargon? That are written in the opposite of plain language? This session will explain the principles of the Federal Plain Language Guidelines and show how to apply them directly to our proposal writing.

Samantha Enslen runs Dragonfly Editorial, an agency focused on technical, medical, and scientific communications. She is an award-winning writer and a frequent public speaker. She is on the board of the American Copy Editors Society.
