Editing and Typography: The Formula for Getting Your Proposals into Peak Condition

Sculpting a lean, powerful body takes a combination of diet and exercise. Developing a lean, powerful proposal takes a combination of smart editing and typography. I will present strategies that address editing and typography for proposals, and how these factors work together to produce a winning submission that adheres to the tight page restrictions typical of commercial RFPs. Attendees will seek out and eliminate unnecessary words and clichés, and look at powerful techniques used in creative writing to keep readers engaged. We will explore editing strategies that support exceptional typography, identifying opportunities for pull quotes, sidebars, and effective captions. The results equal proposals that are more readable, compelling, and polished. Carefully chosen words blended with creative typography help develop a document that showcases corporate culture and client understanding, making a good proposal great.

Heather Kirk has 12 years of experience in marketing and sales. She has been writing and designing proposals for architectural and engineering services for the past 8 years. Heather has an M.A. in professional communications from Royal Roads University, a B.A. in English, and a diploma in publishing. She spends her free time enjoying the prairie sunshine with her horse, Hula, just outside Calgary, and is starting to build a freelance travel-writing portfolio.
