When I was 11-years-old, my dad bought a piano and wedged it in a nook in a room directly below my bedroom. Each night, as I fell asleep, I heard the music he played, a somewhat muffled sound, through the floorboards of my bedroom. I came to know and love the music he played - Van Morrison, Beethoven, Tom Waits, Bob Seger. In the morning, if time allowed before school, I would attempt to imitate what he played the night before. Most times, I was able to figure out the basic chords and sound of the song - in fact, I learned how to play Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" this way. I never had piano lessons, but I grew up in a family with generations of musicians (to include a great-great uncle who played piano for the Dorsey Brothers), so one might say that I have an ear for music. I have since bought my own piano and still have not had one piano lesson, but I continue to teach myself how to play the songs that I love, or those that my kids are into at the moment, with a little help from YouTube tutorials but mostly I play by fiddling with the piano keys and listening for how the different sounds come together. My New Year's resolution for 2017 was to teach myself three songs that I enjoy listening to, so far I've learned how to play one - "The Scientist" by Coldplay.
