APMP is proud to announce its 2019 class of 40 Under 40 award recipients. Recognizing proposal management professionals from around the world, APMP’s 40 Under 40 program celebrates winners’ accomplishments to date and future aspirations.

The program recognizes contributors who are young but have already made a noticeable impression on their companies and the overall profession. Hailing from around the world, the 2019 class features proposal managers noted for winning big, revamping processes, facilitating teamwork, and giving back to their communities.

Karina Ames

What Makes Karina Outstanding

  • Karina was the first bid manager employed by consulting engineering firm GHD in Australia, introducing bid management practices and leading a training program. In her current role as Winning Work Leader – APAC at Aurecon she has led extensive change management and has recruited and manages a team of more than 20 proposal professionals, focused on best practice and providing high value services.
  • Karina has introduced training programs for both company staff and the general industry through the Brisbane Writers’ Workshop.
  • She joined the APMP ANZ Chapter in 2016 and managed their networking events across Australia before being voted in as chair for 2019.

  • Callie is a certified APMP Practitioner, and she has mentored dozens of colleagues in achieving their APMP certifications. For example, while leading the proposal team at O.C. She went on to personally mentor multiple junior writers in achieving their Foundation certifications.
  • Callie volunteers her time as the Chair of both Programs and Social Media for The Colorado Chapter of the APMP. She has also contributed thought leadership to the APMP Journal.

She is an avid road cyclist. Last summer, she set a goal to summit all of the major canyons in the Salt Lake City area, several of which reach nearly 9,000 feet of altitude.   • At 33, Michele Atkinson has already built a recognized proposal consulting firm with dozens of repeat clients. She founded Cavalry Consulting in 2016 after working in a variety of roles at her previous employers. Michele has doubled the growth of the company each year since its formation.

I like to do things that people say are impossible just to prove them wrong. If something sticks in my head for long enough, I will decide that it MUST be done. I ran a half marathon, competed in powerlifting and fitness competitions, started a proposal consulting business, and spoke on stages, to name a few.

  • Shirlyn has focused on improving Insitu’s proposal development process, developing and implementing guidelines/checklists for the team and the company. She has developed a proposal manager checklist that addresses all phases of a proposal.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher; to be able to share my knowledge with others, help them develop a broader understanding of subjects, and to guide them on the path they want to achieve. Even though I am not the schoolteacher I envisioned, I am still teaching others, as a Proposal Manager. I guide our Capture Managers, Program Managers, and Proposal Teams through the entire capture processes, give instruction lessons on Just-in-Time training, and help get them to the final product of a submitted proposal. I enjoy working with our teams.

  • Lynne spearheaded an initiative to develop a proposal management tool to help proposal staff implement best practices, develop strategic messaging/win themes, and stay organized throughout the proposal process. Receiving high remarks from management, the tool is now a mandatory part of her department’s proposal development process and is used by more than 40 staff on every pursuit.
  • Lynne serves as a mentor to new hires and teaches proposal management best practices to staff from a variety of backgrounds—from little to no proposal experience to experienced proposal professionals. She allows the new hire to shadow her while managing a proposal from cradle to grave, and provides coaching and feedback during an approximately eight-week mentoring session.

  • Gareth has designed a bid process for the tpgroup company that is appropriate for each of the disparate business units and is scalable as the company grows both organically and through acquisitions. He has managed and supported bids totaling a value in excess of £200 million with a current win rate of 65 percent.
  • At tpgroup, he has created and delivered multiple internal training courses in capture planning and bid management to sales and bid management teams, increasing their awareness of tpgroup’s processes and procedures, and training them to use the tools and templates he has created.

  • An active member in APMP National Capital Area (NCA) Chapter, Erin organized YPP, a group bringing together young proposal professionals.   • Tara was selected to be a part of the California Chapter 2018 Foundation Cohort Program, resulting in her successfully passing the APMP Foundation examination.   • In 2017, Allison successfully pursued certification with APMP (CF-APMP) and attended the New Orleans APMP conference. That experience inspired Allison to join the Mid-South (now Rhythm & Harmony) chapter of APMP and serve the board as Vice Chair. In this role, Allison supports with marketing activities and manages the Louisiana members.
  • Allison has taken the lessons learned over the past eight years in proposal management and again narrowed her career focus to the area in which she is most successful – capture management. Using her key understanding of the education market, growing professional network, and analytical skills, Allison is facilitating as capture manager while continuing to train new staff in the art of proposal management.

  • A member of APMP for nine years, Ceri’s currently serving as the Western Regional Chair of the APMP Maple Leaf chapter. She recently ran an in-person networking event in Vancouver, featured as a panelist on an “Ask a People Manager” webinar.
  • Ceri is part of the team that has created a key proposal enabler tailored to the Canadian market – an intranet site that is available in English and French. She was personally responsible for creating leading practices content including a top tips series (one-page guides) on topics such as planning and writing an executive summary, creating clear, consistent and compelling copy, and conducting confident and principled negotiation.
  • Ceri worked with a development team to use natural language processing (NLP) and AI technologies to create a chatbot that answers proposal-related queries. She wrote extensive scripts and stipulated the analytics to track during the pilot.

Erin Ortiz

What Makes Erin Outstanding

  • In her role, Erin works with capture, marketing, and sales functions to support business growth for the organization. She leverages her experience in e-learning design to create templates, compelling graphics, and prose that make complex solutions easier to understand by her team’s international customers.
  • Erin works to ensure proposals are culturally sensitive and written in a way that is concise and aligned with cultural norms. As a proposal manager, she understands the constraints translation puts on proposal development and creates schedules that mitigate conflict and delays.
  • Erin discovered APMP early in her proposal career and used the BOK to launch best practice initiatives in her company, including spearheading the effort to create a content library and graphics repository. She also conducted a benchmarking analysis and identified areas to improve efficiency using tools from APMP.

  • Vincent is a trusted partner with some of the top sales leaders in his company, and they look to Vincent to not only manage RFPs, but also as a sales strategist prior to an RFP release, and an orals coach once our company is down-selected to the presentation round. During Vincent’s three-year span at Kforce, he has averaged a 99.5% customer satisfaction rating through the company’s formal survey process (he has a perfect 100% rating for the past 12 months).
  • Vincent is nicknamed “The Diplomat” because of his finesse managing large, complex and sometimes difficult teams who are all working remotely around the country and not co-located in one physical location. He is known for keeping his cool under (what can be) tremendous pressure at times. 
  • Vincent obtained his Practitioner-level certification at the end of 2018. He quietly worked on his PPAQ behind the scenes while juggling a heavy workload and relocating his family halfway across the country in 2018.

  • Sachi was awarded the “Microsoft Canada Enterprise Services GPGP (Great People, Great Performance) Award” for successfully leading pursuits and going above and beyond in her role, particularly for a Canadian financial industry-related RFP in January 2016.

What Makes Sareesh Outstanding

  • Sareesh stumbled into his proposal career when, as a Business Analyst for an IT firm, he helped the proposal department meet a short deadline. A colleague invited him to join APMP where he really began to learn about the industry. He ran for a board position and won APMP’s “Future Leader Award” at BPC 2015 for his contribution to his local chapter (NCA).
  • While attending law school, Sareesh received his APMP Practitioner certification. He looked for opportunities to leverage the knowledge he gained through APMP to fulfill his law school responsibilities. For instance, as a member of the American University Business Law Review, Sareesh wrote about the excessive use of LPTA in defense acquisition, focusing on a large IDIQ procurement.
  • His experience interacting with APMP professionals from around the world inspired Sareesh to learn more about international procurement systems. He has transferred to George Washington University and when he graduates in May 2019, he will be one of only 9 students to graduate with GW’s inagural “Government Procurement Law” concentration. Sareesh aspires to eventually start his own government contracting business.

  • Charlotte started her career in the industry right out of school with an apprenticeship at NG bailey. The apprenticeship was originally set as a three-year course, but Charlotte’s determination and aptitude saw her complete the apprenticeship in two years instead. In that time, she won several bids for some of the country’s largest construction and services projects, including major financial services companies, higher education institutions, defense organizations and the largest business IT fit out in the UK.
  • By the age of 21, Charlotte had risen to the role of Bid Manager and had taken on line management responsibilities. She has been the recipient of the “Strategic Proposals Rising Stars Award” in 2017 and the “Individual Strategic Proposals UK Award for Excellence” in acknowledgement of her commitment, passion and success within the industry in 2018.
  • In response to recognizing a need for greater gender equality within the industry, she started Women and Bids and Proposals (WIBAP), an organization aimed at promoting diversity in the industry through provision of networking opportunities, professional and personal support for its members, toolkits to help organizations monitor and embrace diversity within their bid and proposal functions, and helping to attract young people to careers within the profession.
