What does being an APMP Fellow mean to you?

Being an APMP Fellow allows me opportunities to “give back” to the APMP community, continue to advance our profession, contribute to the codification of best practices across the profession as one of the APMP Body of Knowledge authors, and mentor and work with those who are newer to our profession. APMP Fellows provide a community of highly experienced professionals eager to work with and support each other’s continued growth.

What's your best memory from attending an APMP event?

Sitting by a swimming pool in Palm Springs, CA, long after conference events had finished for the day and “talking shop” with new friends from all around the world who all “understood” the challenges—and joys—of working proposals…and then getting to see everyone year after year at subsequent conferences. They’ve all become my proposal family.

What advice do you have for a proposal professional entering our field?

Be open to learning every day on every proposal. Seek out mentors to support your growth in the field. Look at all the different roles that go into preparing for and creating winning proposals and find opportunities to gain the skills to perform those various roles so you can become a multi-faceted proposal professional. Once you’ve educated yourself on the multiple roles available in our profession, find—or grow—a role you love and a team that makes you happy—and seek new opportunities if you don’t find that joy.

Anything else you would like to share?

I’ve worked in the proposal profession for over 35 years, held leadership positions in APMP International and in my local chapter, mentored and trained teams of proposal professionals, advised hundreds of companies on proposal best practices, and look forward to every new day working with my team of proposal experts. #ProudToBeAPMP

The Executive Summary is the key element of each proposal, literally the most important part of the response next to the price – this is why my focus was on this micro certification. Understanding the principles of Deal-Strategy, Win-Strategy, Competitor-Analysis, Ghosting, Persuasive Writing, Features/Benefits/Discriminators, and many more is essential and beneficial for so much more than just the Executive Summary.

Acquiring the executive summary micro certification has helped to build my confidence in producing best practice Executive Summaries. I also benefit from the social media badge for my LinkedIn profile and certification to add to my resume. Both of these allow me to verify my Executive Summary capabilities.

Without APMP, I would not have the tools or knowledge of the industry to have the career I have today and the success I have experienced.

With this micro-certification and digital badge, I signal to my bid team and stakeholders that I am familiar with this topic. They can use me as their contact and "sparring partner," independent of RFPs.

APMP certification is the gold standard for the industry. For me, accreditation is formal recognition of my commitment to the profession, as well as an avenue for improving my performance and bid outcomes by training in APMP principles.
