Bio

Kirste brings more than 36 years of experience providing support in all facets of business development and marketing services, including identifying and targeting opportunities, identifying potential team partners and competitors, developing strategies for new opportunities, managing conferences, and developing proposals. Currently, she is Director of Growth for Aleut Federal's Environmental Services Group, comprised of multiple 8(a) and small disadvantaged Alaskan Native Corporations. In this role, she plays a key role in defining and implementing the growth strategy for the environmental services line of business, including defining teaming and pursuit strategies. Over the past 12 years, Kirste has been working with small businesses in a variety of industries, including environmental management, construction, information technology, and manufacturing. She provides expertise in helping businesses build their business development capabilities as well as understanding the unique requirements associated with bidding as a small business on federal procurements.

Kirste serves as a volunteer counselor with the East Tennessee Procurement Technical Assistance Center providing training and coaching for small businesses throughout Tennessee. She also serves as a volunteer supporting the Professional Services Council (PSC) Vision Forecast Conference, including as Vision Conference Civilian Chair and on the Executive Advisory Board for the PSC Civilian Agencies Council. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Energy, Technology, and Environmental Business Association (ETEBA). She achieved APMP Certification – Foundation Level and holds an MBA from the University of Phoenix.

In her free time, Kirste loves photography, cooking, playing with her seven kitties, and the love of her life, her 8-year-old granddaughter.

What does being an APMP Fellow mean to you?

Being a Fellow means working with the next generation of proposal professionals to help them achieve their dreams and their goals in the proposal profession. I enjoy teaching and mentoring, and helping others grow in this industry. It also means upholding a high standard of what a proposal professional is.

What's your best memory from attending an APMP event?

I always enjoy networking the best! I've made many friends over my tenure with APMP and look forward to growing these relationships.

What advice do you have for a proposal professional entering our field?

Don't be afraid to try and ask questions whenever you have them.

Being a part of APMP, I get access to the knowledge and experience of great leaders and mentors from the community. I have learned a great deal from the webinars and conferences I attended on diverse topics from career progression in Proposal Management, trends (such as automation) in PreSales to achieving work-life balance, and handling burn-outs – all real-life experiences.

The Executive Summary is the key element of each proposal, literally the most important part of the response next to the price – this is why my focus was on this micro certification. Understanding the principles of Deal-Strategy, Win-Strategy, Competitor-Analysis, Ghosting, Persuasive Writing, Features/Benefits/Discriminators, and many more is essential and beneficial for so much more than just the Executive Summary.
