Bio

Thomas started his leadership career as a German Naval Officer. After leaving active service, he was responsible until 2023 for the management of medium to large "must win" bids for public clients, as well as key follow-on projects, at Thales Germany, a global leader in maritime defense systems, providing innovative systems, products, and solutions to national navies worldwide. In his role and as a certified Shipley Proposal Coach, he provided guidance and leadership to executives and key team members from the functional organizations at Thales to coordinate and implement successful proposal processes for acquisition and strategic activities during the acquisition process.

As a leader committed to excellence in proposal management, he is currently a member of the APMP DACH board, the German-speaking chapter of APMP, responsible for Knowledge Management and translating and updating the "Body of Knowledge" into German. During 2022, he took the time to translate the complete BoK independently so that the result, the German-language Body of Knowledge, is now available to APMP members in addition to the English and Japanese-language versions.

He is highly respected throughout the German-speaking proposal management industry and is known for his passion for proposals and for promoting best practices in proposal management. In his roles in Sales and Marketing, Proposal Management, and After Sales Services, he has successfully defined and implemented best practice processes and recruited, managed, and motivated people within international teams.

What does being an APMP Fellow mean to you?

I am honored to have received recognition as an APMP Fellow. I have always been open to learning from others and have used my years of experience to enhance others' proposal capture and management capabilities. It's very satisfying not only to take something but also to give something back to our profession.

What's your best memory from attending an APMP event?

After the pandemic, it was wonderful to reconnect with APMP colleagues at BPC 2023 in Amsterdam. Not only do you learn from others, but you are also reinvigorated with innovative tools, resources, and techniques for business success.
Best of all, however, are the personal contacts I have missed for so long during the pandemic.

What advice do you have for a proposal professional entering our field?

Access our Body of Knowledge and leverage the experiences/input from others before you to make your job easier and to apply best practices.

This topic, Executive Summaries, is way underrated. The Executive Summary is the most eye-catching document, which almost everyone on the customer side reads. Yet, in most bid teams, we don’t dedicate the attention it deserves. I want to learn about something I can immediately put into practice at my workplace, which provides a “quick win” to the team and is a long-term benefit for the company.
